We are committed to improving and maintaining our homes to a high standard. The vast majority of repairs are completed when the resident is living in their home.

On rare occasions, residents may be asked to temporarily move to enable the works to be completed. This is also sometimes known as being 'decanted'. This will only ever be due to health and safety concerns, or if it is not possible to complete the works with the customer at home.

Our policy details our approach to temporary rehousing and provides guidance on how this process is managed in a fair and efficient way, in accordance with relevant legislation.

Here's what you need to know

What is temporary re-housing?

A short-term move to another property when your home becomes unsafe or uninhabitable.

When we provide temporary housing

  • Major repairs or structural damage to your home.
  • Fire, flood or other emergencies.
  • Health and safety risks that cannot be fixed immediately.

Conditions

  • You must continue paying rent during the temporary move.
  • The property offered will be suitable but may not match your current home.
  • Pets and belongings can move with you, but storage may be limited.

How long can you stay?

Until your original home is safe and ready to return. We’ll keep you updated on timescales throughout.

Your responsibilities

  • Look after the temporary property.
  • Report any issues promptly.
  • Move back when repairs are complete - refusal may affect your tenancy.

Important

  • Temporary housing is not a permanent transfer.
  • If you need long-term relocation, other policies (like our Management Transfer) apply.
