We recognise that owning a pet can improve mental health, reduce loneliness and help you maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
This policy sets out under what circumstances, and what type of pet, you can and cannot keep in West Kent homes, and how we expect them and your home to be looked after.
Here's what you need to know
When you need permission
- You must apply for permission to have a cat or dog.
- More than one pet in your property.
- Exotic pets or unusual animals.
- Apply by completing our pet application form.
- You do not need permission to keep a reasonable number of caged house birds, pigeons, or small caged animals like hamsters, rabbits, or small reptiles.
Pets not allowed
- Dangerous dogs (as defined by law).
- Animals that could harm others or damage property.
- Pets unsuitable for your home type (large dogs in small flats).
Your responsibilities
- Keep pets under control and prevent nuisance (noise, fouling, aggression).
- Clean up after your pet both inside and outside.
- Ensure vaccinations and health checks are up to date.
- Do not leave pets unattended for long periods.
Property care
- You’re responsible for any damage caused by pets.
- Flea treatment may be required when you move out.
If things go wrong
- Report any issues with pets immediately.
- We may ask you to remove a pet if it causes problems or breaches the policy.
