Our employability and training team and Sevenoaks District Council recently partnered up to launch a new Start Up programme to help local residents turn their business ideas into real ventures.

The eight-week course has just finished, and participants now have the knowledge, confidence, and practical tools to move forward into self-employment.

During the programme, residents learned about key topics such as marketing, branding, profit basics, daily business operations, and important tax and legal responsibilities. Each session aimed to give them a solid base for long-term success.

The group came up with a variety of interesting business ideas, such as:

  • A bakery teaching enterprise

  • Freelance art and creative services

  • Domestic and commercial cleaning businesses

  • Vintage clothing resale

  • Environmental consultancy

Geraldine, one of the programme’s participants, is getting ready to launch Bun Bun Co, which makes soft toys inspired by Filipino cuisine and culture. She says the course has made a big difference in her journey as a new business owner: “The team were really friendly and supportive. I already had some knowledge, but this course helped me understand things in much greater depth, from costings to legal structures. I now feel confident that I’ll be able to set my business up properly.”

With support during the programme, each participant created a strong business plan and can now apply for a £500 start-up grant from Sevenoaks District Council to help make their ideas a reality.

The programme took place at The Meeting Point Business Centre, offering great facilities, ongoing mentoring, and access to discounted business support services. This helps residents continue to receive guidance as they grow their businesses.

Dawn Grant, Employment and Training Manager added: “We’re really excited about this project. It’s a fantastic opportunity for residents who want to develop their business ideas and gain the skills and confidence to succeed.”
