Abacus Furniture Project will close on 16 November 2026.
We know this news will be disappointing for many people. For years, Abacus has been an important part of the local community, helping people access affordable furniture, reducing waste through reuse and bringing people together through volunteering and community support.
We want to thank everyone who has been part of that journey, including customers, donors, volunteers, partners and staff. The difference Abacus has made over the years should not be underestimated.
What happens next?
Abacus will continue operating over the coming weeks.
During October, we will gradually reduce the range of donations accepted, with all donation collections ending on 31 October 2026. The service will close on 16 November 2026. Depending on stock levels, there may be opportunities to purchase some of the remaining items before the service closes.
What support is available for people who used Abacus?
If you need some support accessing furniture, please get in touch by emailing help@wkha.org.uk or calling 01732 749400.
Where do I donate furniture now?
Donations may be accepted by national charities. You may also be able to donate using Freecycle or Facebook Marketplace.
Why is Abacus closing?
The closure is linked to plans to redevelop the Greatness Lane site and build 26 affordable flats and family homes for local people.
The new homes will replace older accommodation with modern, energy-efficient homes designed to meet current and future housing needs. They will also help increase the amount of affordable housing available locally.

Looking ahead
While the closure of Abacus marks the end of an important chapter, it is also the beginning of a new one for Greatness Lane.
We'll continue to share updates about both the closure process and the future development as plans progress.
Thank you again to everyone who has supported Abacus over the years.
