We’re supporting Kent Housing Group’s (KHG) fire safety campaign this summer.

We all know that a fire can happen at any time, but there are some simple things we can do to stay fire safe, in our homes and the communal areas we use. That’s why we’re supporting KHG’s fire safety campaign, ‘Let’s stay fire safe’.

The campaign is based on simple advice and guidance that we can all follow to ensure that we minimise the risks of fires. These top tips include:

  • Have a working smoke detector and test it regularly.
  • Make sure you do not overload your electrical sockets.
  • Read the fire safety advice for any portable heaters you use.
  • Don’t leave lit candles or cigarettes unattended in your home.
  • Shut fire doors in communal areas and report any damage to them to your landlord straight away.
  • Keep communal areas like corridors, entrance halls and stairwells clear of clutter.
  • Don’t charge personal items in communal areas or store them in communal cupboards.
  • Don’t light open fires or BBQs in your home or on a balcony.
  • Make sure you and your family know what the fire escape plan is for your building.

Neil Diddams, Executive Director of Property and Assets at West Kent said: “Ensuring our resident's safety and security is one of our main priorities here at West Kent. Fire safety is something we take incredibly seriously, and our teams work closely with our residents and partners to ensure the correct steps are taken to adhere to regulations as well as make fire safety advice and guidance readily available. We are proud to be supporting Kent Housing Group’s ‘Let’s stay fire safe’ campaign and will continue to ensure our residents stay fire safe.”

Speak to us about any concerns you have about fire safety.

We’re encouraging all our residents to speak to us if they have any concerns about fire safety, either in their home, communal area or block.

This could be reporting damage to fire doors, concerns about clutter building up in communal areas like hallways, corridors or stairwells, issues surrounding the safety of electrical sockets and more.

If you own or use an e-bike or e-scooter, there are some important things you need to do and remember when charging your e-bike or e-scooter to stay safe and avoid endangering yourself, your loved ones and your home.

E-bikes and e-scooters are mostly powered by lithium-ion batteries and can be charged at home. However, if they are not charged correctly and safely, these batteries can catch fire, or fail catastrophically and ‘explode’, or lead to a fire. If your e-bike, e-scooter or lithium-ion battery catches fire - Get out, stay out, and call 999 - do not try to put out the fire yourself.
