Earlier this year, Kelly*, one of our residents, was referred to our financial inclusion team as she was in an immediate financial crisis. She only had a tub of margarine in her fridge and had no means to buy any additional food for two weeks. Our financial inclusion team knew they needed to act quickly.

A member of the team immediately contacted Loaves and Fishes foodbank in Sevenoaks to arrange food vouchers for Kelly, who initially felt embarrassed about having to use a foodbank. After some words of reassurance from our financial inclusion team, Kelly understood that there is no shame in accepting help from services like foodbanks, they are to be used and to support those in crisis. Soon after making contact, Loaves and Fish confirmed they could help Kelly.

After feeling more comfortable with accepting help, Kelly then informed our fuel efficiency officer that mould had been growing in various parts of her home. Recognising the severity of the situation, our fuel efficiency officer made an immediate referral to arrange the removal of the mould.

To ensure Kelly was safe and warm in her home, our fuel efficiency officer contacted Kelly’s energy supplier to find out how they could support vulnerable customers. The supplier asked Kelly some questions and then confirmed they would send her an energy efficiency package, including items like a mattress topper and an electric blanket.

Our recent partnership with Better Housing Better Health was also able to support Kelly with fuel poverty support and advice. After some investigation, the Better Housing Better Health team informed Kelly that she was eligible for a £49 top-up fuel voucher and various household items to improve energy efficiency. Kelly requested an extra electric blanket, LED light bulbs, and draft excluders.

Kelly was in a crisis but thanks to our financial inclusion team’s quick-action, partnerships and knowledge, she is now doing much better and knows that we are here to help her should she ever need support again.
