Electrical safety tests in your home

Every five years, we carry out an electrical safety test in your home. This is called an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).

It helps make sure your electrics are safe to use and reduces the risk of electric shocks or fires. We’re legally required to do this to help keep you and your home safe.

Why this is important

Electrical faults are one of the most common causes of house fires. These checks help us find and fix problems early, before they become serious.

By carrying out this test, we can:

  • make sure your homes is safe
  • reduce the risk of electrical fires or shocks
  • spot hidden problems
  • make sure your electrics meet current safety standards

These checks help us find and fix problems early, before they become serious.

 FAQs:

  • What happens during the visit?

One of our engineers will visit your home to check your electrical system. This includes:

    • inspecting your fuse box (consumer unit)
    • testing wiring, sockets and switches
    • checking everything meets current safety standards

We’ll need to turn off your electricity for part of the visit to carry out these checks safely.

  • How long does it take?

The test usually takes around three hours.

We know this can be inconvenient, but it only happens once every five years and helps keep your home safe.

  • Why does the power need to be turned off?

Some of the checks can only be done safely when the electricity is switched off. This allows us to properly test your wiring and circuits.

  • How will I know about my appointment?

We’ll contact you in advance to let you know about your appointment. This could be by:

    • letter
    • email
    • text message
  • How to prepare for your appointment

To help things run smoothly, please:

    • make sure someone is home to let the engineer in
    • plan ahead for the temporary loss of power (for example, charging devices in advance)
    • make sure there is clear access to your fuse box and electrical points
  • If your appointment doesn’t work for you

We understand the time may not always be convenient. If you need to rearrange, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer another appointment.

It’s important to do this in advance where you can. Missed appointments may delay the check and could mean we need to take further action to gain access.

  • What happens if I miss my appointment?

Missed appointments can delay essential checks. If we can’t get access after repeated attempts, we may need to take further steps to arrange access.
