New singing group aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness in Edenbridge.

We’ve been awarded funding to deliver a free singing group for people over 50 in the Edenbridge area. Jackie Hintze, an experienced local choir leader will deliver weekly online choir sessions for local people with the aim of reducing social isolation and loneliness.

The idea came from a group of residents at our older persons’ sc

heme in Edenbridge, Queens Court, who were concerned about social isolation both at Queens Court and in the local area. They wanted to create a space where older people can connect with each other and build strong relationships through their mutual interests and activities.

In June last year we applied for funding from the National Lottery Awards for All to deliver activities in Edenbridge to support local people, but decided to delay the start date to consider how we might deliver these activities during lockdowns and through a time of reduced social contact. Jackie says:

I’ve been working with other groups to continue their choirs online, and while it isn’t quite the same, it still brings people together, is a fun activity you can do with other people and it helps to make people happy. As soon as we’re able the group will meet face to face.

The wider project ‘Connecting older people in Edenbridge’ will also deliver computer support and learning, as well as talks and discussions from external speakers.

If you, or someone you know is interested in joining the choir please complete this form westkent.org/choir, or contact Kevin O’Reilly kevin.oreilly@westkentextra.org.uk or 01732 749412.
