Swanley Youth Film Project

The Swanley Neighbourhood Project was launched in 2006 with the aim of finding out how local people in St Mary’s feel about their community and what changes they would like to make.

Local residents were involved in designing and carrying out some research which discovered that the young people wanted among other things, a local cinema and more family activities. There was also a real interest in the media.

Lots of people helped design and deliver the research with our partner Real Strategies Ltd, who led on the project, and it was felt that the young people were worthy of a reward.

Inspired by the research, they said they’d like to make a full-length musical film about the past, present and future of their area and involve other young people as dancers, singers, costume makers, make up artists.

They have come a long way towards achieving their goal. They planned, fundraised and launched a trailer in December 2007. The project now has the backing of Tom Hart Dyke (of Channel 4 World Garden fame) and Simon Evans a filmmaker and BBC radio host.  Applications for funding to complete the full length film have been made - watch this space for more info!

Their next fundraising venture will be “Swanley’s Got Talent” which will involve adults and young people showcasing their talent and knowledge of the history of Swanley.
