Swanley Neighbourhood Project

The Swanley Neighbourhood Project brought agencies and residents together, improving neighbourhood relations and the neighbourhood, through engagement built on existing models of neighbourhood action planning. It also explored the impact of current practice around inclusion; improved understanding of inter-relations between Gypsy & Traveller and non-Gypsy & Traveller residents and disseminated lessons learned.

This project was delivered in partnership with Real Strategies Ltd and the Centre for Urban and Community Research (CUCR), Goldsmiths University of London.  The project was funded by the Housing Corporation under their innovation and Good Practice Grant Programme 2006/7.

Resulting from the project work:

Residents of the The St Mary’s Estate have formed their own Residents Association  (Residents of St. Mary’s Estate – ROSE).

West Kent has employed a new Neighbourhood Support Co-ordinator to help sustain the work which has began and roll out the good practice to other areas.

There has been a launch of the ENCAMS Safe, Clean and Green Charter which led to an Alleyday clean up in the area. The Swanley Youth Film Project was formed. Young people who acted as researchers on the main project follow their dream to make a musical about the history of Swanley.

Sevenoaks District Council have been given funding by central goverment to improve the facilities at Cherry Avenue recreation ground in Swanley for the 8 - 13 year old age group.

They have a total of £73,000 available, which can be used to improve landscaping, to provide natural play opportunities and additional play equipment. Any information you give will help with the design work. Sevenoaks District Council, with help from West Kent Housing Association and Residents of St Mary's Estate (ROSE) community action group, will be consulting with local residents until the end of the summer and will then carry out another consultation later in the year for residents to comment on designs.
