In most cases you can keep a pet, although you must ask West Kent for permission first. The number of pets you are allowed to keep will depend on the size and type of your home. Larger pets are not allowed in some of our homes, although we will normally give permission for you to keep a small pet such as a hamster, goldfish or bird - you must ask first.
Are there any exceptions?
Yes, people living in some of our properties are not allowed to keep a pet because they are not suitable. You will not be given permission to keep a dog or a cat if:
- You live in a block of flats with more than two storeys (even if you live on the ground floor - unless you have a private garden)
- You live in certain sheltered housing schemes (there may be exceptions for guide dogs or hearing dogs). Ask your scheme manager about the rules where you live.
- You live in temporary accommodation such as a share house or hostel
How do I ask for permission?
You need to ask for permission from your Neighbourhood Housing Officer. You will receive a reply within five working days.
If you would like anymore information about the guidelines for keeping a pet, please read the leaflet attached, or speak to your Neighbourhood Housing Officer.
